Consent to be Part of a Research Study

Title of the Project: Factors that Influence the Willingness to Engage in Intuitive Eating

Invitation to be Part of a Research Study

If you are 18 years old or older and self-identify as “overweight,” you are invited to participate in a research study examining the factors that influence the use of intuitive eating instead of dieting.

 

The Purpose of the Study

The purpose of the study is to better understand what might inhibit someone from engaging in intuitive eating practices.

 

Important Information about the Research Study

Things you should know:

  • This study has been approved by the Institutional Review Board (IRB) of Barry University. The IRB point of contact at Barry is Ms. Jasmine Trana (305-899-3020; jtrana@barry.edu).
  • Taking part in this research project is entirely voluntary. You do not have to participate, and you can stop at any time without adverse consequence to you.
  • If you decide to be part of the study, you will be one of 80 participants.
  • The results of the study should be available within 6 months and may be obtained by request to rmurray@barry.edu.

 

What will happen if you take part in this study?

After consenting to be a participant, you will be asked to complete a brief demographic questionnaire. The questionnaire is followed by a single page, written testimonial, by a woman talking about her experience with Intuitive Eating (IE). After reading the testimonial, you will be asked to complete a brief survey. Your participation should take no more than 10 minutes.

 

What risks might result from being in this study?

Participation in the study is unlikely to pose a risk to participants, however you may discontinue participation at any time without penalty.

How could you benefit from this study?

Participation in the study will not lead to any direct benefits to you.

Who can profit from the study results?

The study results will potentially help those who work in the fields of medicine, mental health, and nutrition to understand the barriers associated with the healthy practice of Intuitive Eating (IE).

 

How will we protect your information?

You will not be asked to give your name, and the documents you complete will automatically be assigned a Respondent ID Number that will not be associated with you or your computer. Your responses cannot be connected back to you so the information you provide is confidential. The data will be stored indefinitely on the cloud-based software known as “PsychData.”

 

What other choices do I have if I don’t take part in this study?

There is no alternative procedure available to participants, but you may discontinue your participation at any time.
