Important Information About This Research Project

You are being invited to participate in a research study about lying and experiences in different situations.

This study is being conducted by Dr. Drew Curtis, Ph.D., from the University of Texas at Tyler.

You are being asked to take part in this study because you are 18 years or older, and you wish to complete an anonymous online survey about your experiences with lying.

What is involved in the study?

If you agree to participate in this study, you will be asked to complete an anonymous online survey regarding your experiences with lying behaviors.

We will work to make sure that no one sees your survey responses without approval. However, because we are using the internet, there is a chance that someone could intercept or access your online responses without permission. In some cases, this information could be used to identify you.

How long can I expect to be in this study?

The online survey will take about 15 to 20 minutes to complete but can vary per individual.

You can choose to stop participating for any reason at any time. However, if you decide to stop participating in the study, we encourage you to tell the researchers. You may be asked if you are willing to complete some study exit forms.

What are the possible benefits of this study?

You will receive no direct benefit from participating in this study; however, we hope the information learned from this study will benefit others in the future. Information gained from this research could lead to better understanding of lying and pathological lying behaviors.

What are the possible risks of this study?

Data will be collected using the Internet; we anticipate that your participation in this research presents no greater risk than everyday use of the internet. Please note that email communication in general is neither private nor secure. Though we are taking precautions to protect your privacy, you should be aware that information sent through email, or the internet could be read by a third party.

Psychological Stress

Some of the questions we will ask you as part of this study may make you feel uncomfortable. You may refuse to answer any of the questions, take a break or stop your participation in this study at any time. If at any time you experience psychological stress and decide to stop participating, you are welcome to stop. Loss of Confidentiality

Any time information is collected; there is a potential for loss of confidentiality. Every effort will be made to keep your information confidential; however, this cannot be guaranteed.

You should understand that the investigator is not prevented from reporting information to the authorities in order to prevent serious harm to you or others. If the investigator suspects child, elder, or disabled person’s abuse, they will report such concerns to proper authorities as required by law.

Who will know that you are in this study?

You will not be linked to any presentations or publications regarding this research. We will keep who you are confidential. Absolute anonymity cannot be guaranteed over the Internet.

Individuals from UT Tyler Institutional Review Board may inspect the study records. Should the data be published, no individual information will be disclosed.

Will I be paid to take part in this study?

You will not be paid to take part in this research study.

Do I have to be in the study?

You do not have to be in this study. You are a volunteer! It is okay if you want to stop at any time and not be included in the study. You do not have to answer any questions you do not want to answer.

Can I stop taking part in this research study?

Yes. If you decide to participate and later change your mind, you are free to stop taking part in the research study at any time.
