Examining pathological lying and normative lying

Instructions:

Please read this consent form carefully and take your time deciding about whether to participate.  Please contact the principal investigator or faculty advisor if there are any words or information that you do not clearly understand.  The purpose of the study, risks, inconveniences, discomforts, and other important information about the study are listed below.  If you decide to participate, you will be given a copy of this form to keep.

Why is this study being done?

You are being invited to participate in a research study about remorse across different populations. This study aims to measure the amount of remorse present in individuals who identify as pathological liars compared to the general population as well as individuals with Antisocial Personality Disorder.

This study is being conducted by Sydney Thompson under the supervision of Dr. Drew Curtis, from the University of Texas at Tyler. This study is being conducted as a graduate student project for Dr. Curtis’ research lab.

You are being asked to take part in this study because you fit the description of one of three of our population samples.

What is involved in the study?

If you agree to participate in this study, you will be asked to:

  • Access the survey link through PsychData

  • Review this informed consent form

  • Complete a survey that includes questions from various assessments as well as multiple vignette style questions. This should take around 10-15 minutes total.

This is a research study and, therefore, not intended to provide a medical or therapeutic diagnosis or treatment. The intervention provided in the course of this study is not necessarily equivalent to the standard method of prevention, diagnosis, or treatment of a health condition.

We will work to make sure that no one sees your survey responses without approval.  However, because we are using the internet, there is a chance that someone could intercept or access your online responses without permission.  In some cases, this information could be used to identify you.

How long can I expect to be in this study?

This study will take about 10-15 minutes total. This study is a one-time response.

You can choose to stop participating for any reason at any time. However, if you decide to stop participating in the study, we encourage you to tell the researchers. You may be asked if you are willing to complete some study exit forms.

What are the possible risks of this study?

There are no known risks associated with participation in this study.

Psychological Stress

Some of the questions we will ask you as part of this study may make you feel uncomfortable.  You may refuse to answer any of the questions, take a break or stop your participation in this study at any time.

Loss of Confidentiality

Any time information is collected, there is a potential risk of loss of confidentiality.  Every effort will be made to keep your information confidential; however, this cannot be guaranteed.

You should understand that the investigator is not prevented from reporting information to authorities in order to prevent serious harm to you or to others.  If the investigator suspects child, elder or disabled person’s abuse, they will report such concerns to proper authorities as required by law.

Will my information be kept confidential?

Information about you that is collected for this research study will remain confidential unless you give your permission to share it with others, or if we are required by law to release it.  You should know that certain organizations that may look at and/or copy your study records for research, quality assurance, and data analysis include:

• Representatives of government agencies, like the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), involved in keeping research safe for people, and

• The UT Tyler Institutional Review Board.

This access may involve inspection and copying of confidential study related records.  Therefore, absolute confidentiality cannot be guaranteed.  If the results of this study are published or presented at meetings, you will not be identified.

What are the possible benefits of this study?

You will receive no direct benefit from participating in this study; however, we hope the information learned from this study will benefit others in the future.  Information gained from this research could lead to better understanding of the implications of a pathological lying diagnosis. This could be beneficial to the recognition of pathological lying as a psychological disorder.

Will I be paid if I take part in this research study?

You will not be paid to take part in this research study.

Do I have to be in the study?

You do not have to be in this study.  You are a volunteer! It is okay if you want to stop at any time and not be included in the study.  You do not have to answer any questions you do not want to answer.
